چکیده

We address the problem of null values and other forms of semi-structured data in object-oriented databases. Various aspects and issues concerning semi-structured data that are currently presented in the literature are discussed in the paper. We propose a new universal approach to semi-structured data based on the idea of absent objects. The idea covers null values and union types and can be smoothly combined with the idea of default values. We introduce a simple model of object store that is similar to the Tsimmis model. In contrast to the main stream of the research, our basic assumption is that semi-structured data are not only to be queried but also processed by an integrated query/programming language. To this end we discuss query language constructs that are relevant to query semistructured data and corresponding issues in programming languages. The idea follows the stack-based approach to integrated query/programming languages that we have implemented in the LOQIS system. Finally we briefly discuss a new approach to polymorphic typing of semi-structured data that is implemented in LOQIS.

Integrating Unnormalised Semi-structured Data Sources

From Proc. CAiSE05 LNCS 3520, Pages 460-474 c ©Springer-Verlag 2005 Semi-structured data sources, such as XML, HTML or CSV files, present special problems when performing data integration. In addition to the hierarchical structure of the semistructured data, the data integration must deal with the redundancy in semi-structured data, where the same fact may be repeated in a data source, but shou...

Patterns for Semi-automatic Evolution and Refactoring of RDF Knowledge Bases

With the emerging semantic web, RDF/OWL knowledge bases of all sizes came into existence and use. While applications are evolving, ontology concepts should change with them, but ontology refactoring was left behind for missing tool support or overcharging complexity of operations. To overcome this gap between the poorly structured data and the thoroughly engineered applications, a semi-automati...

ORA-SS: An Object-Relationship-Attribute Model for Semi-Structured Data

Semi structured data is becoming increasingly important with the introduction of XML and related languages and technologies The recent shift from DTDs document type de nitions to XML Schema for XML data highlights the importance of a schema de nition for semi structured data applications At the same time there is a move to extend semi structured data models to express richer semantics In this p...

What ' s not in a name : Some Properties of a Purely StructuralApproach

One approach to integrating knowledge bases is based on nding assertions that relate the expressions in the constituent terminologies. For knowledge bases with many terms this task requires computer support. We set up a formal framework for merging Description Logic TBoxes, and then explore the limits of a purely structural approach to the problem of nding interrelationships between knowledge b...

Recursive Query Processing in SBQL

Recursive queries are required for many database applications. Among them we can mention Bill-Of-Material (BOM), various kinds of networks (transportation, telecommunication, etc.), workflows, processing semi-structured data (XML, RDF), and others. The support for recursive queries in current query languages is limited. In particular, this concerns the corresponding extensions of SQL in Oracle ...
